John 8:21-59; Luke 10:1-11:13

One of the highest values in our culture is that of freedom. People uphold the ability to do whatever they want as one of the necessary rights of our age. Freedom is defined as the ability to do whatever someone wants, if it does not hurt anyone else, with a very vague notion of hurt. Yet the ability to do whatever we desire only ends up leading to bondage. Jesus in John 8 discusses what true freedom looks like, a necessary understanding for our day and age. He tells his listeners ultimate freedom is only available in Jesus. Those who place their faith in him and walk in righteousness experience true freedom.

Freedom is not found in living for ourselves but rather in living for Christ. Freedom comes in saying no to what we want, so we can say yes to the better things that God has for us. A very different definition than our world offers. Since our neighbors value freedom, discussing freedom may be a great inroad to sharing the gospel with them. We all want freedom, and true freedom is only found in Jesus.

Father God, help me to live in you and for you. Help me to know true freedom comes only in you and not look to the world to provide that which only you provide. Amen.

How can we use the idea of freedom to help communicate the gospel to people?
