Humility is a hard thing to live out. It runs against our flesh to acknowledge we are not the center of the universe, but this truth needs to be embraced by everyone. Notice the two very different people who embrace humility in Matthew and Luke. We see a powerful centurion who confesses he is not worthy to have Jesus even enter his house. A man, who barked orders and was immediately obeyed, stands before Jesus recognizing he cannot bulldoze Jesus. In Jesus, he has encountered his ultimate superior and must submit before him. Then a sinful woman is willing to surrender what may have been her life's savings to anoint Jesus. She recognizes something more valuable than her perfume stands in her presence. The one who can offer her eternal life is worthy of every aspect of her life. These two people, from radically different aspects of society, must acknowledge Jesus is greater than them.

Humility means acknowledging God’s greatness and our desperate need for him. It will then reveal itself in generosity and gratitude for the extravagant debt of sin which God has forgiven. Humility may seem difficult and costly, but it is the only attitude that places us in right relationship with God.

Father God, in seeing your greatness, may I respond in humility. Help me to make my life about your glory and greatness, and not my own. Amen.

How can you cultivate humility today?
