September 25

Luke 1:39-80; Matthew 1:18-25; Luke 2:1-40

Before Jesus is born we learn much about his identity. Elizabeth recognizes that Jesus is Lord. He is her long awaited king. If you follow the word for Lord in her statement in Luke 1, she uses it for Jesus and then seemingly for God the Father in verse 45. Prior to Jesus having done anything other than exist in Mary's womb, Elizabeth seems to understand him as the divine king (which he is). Zechariah then complements her understanding by seeing Jesus as the "horn of salvation." He is both a source of strength, which is the symbolism of horn, and also the source of salvation for the world.

This is who Jesus is. He is the strong king and savior of the world. Therefore, when life seems to overwhelm us we can turn to the one of infinite power who came to Earth for us. As we read this passage and celebrate Christmas in September, we remember the eternal king who gave up his place in heaven to come and die for us.

Father God, thank you for Jesus. Give me eyes to see him for who he is today and live for his glory. Amen.

How can you reveal Jesus as your king through the way you speak and act today?
