Romans 5:1-8:17
The Gospel and the Book of Romans is a message of bad news and good news. For us to fully embrace the good news, we have to first wrestle with the reality of the bad news, which is true of our world and true of us. Paul gives us a lot of bad news in Romans 5-8. We live in a world of sin, we have committed innumerable trespasses, and what we deserve is condemnation and death. This is a sobering message to hear and to believe—it is not just the world that is messed up, I am too. We try to hide this fact from ourselves and others by pretending that everything is fine and dandy when in reality it is far from it.
The message of Jesus is extremely good news. Such great news that it completely overshadows the bad news. In Jesus, we can have peace and reconciliation with God. The immense chasm between a holy God and sinful people has been bridged through Christ. Further, we have access to God and hope for a future. In Jesus, we have been justified (been made right with God) and saved from judgment and condemnation. We have received eternal life and been made righteous. What wonderful news! All that is wrong with us and the world can be made right in Jesus. The final message of these chapters of Romans is when we believe and accept the good news of Jesus, it should transform our lives. We no longer have to live like we used to, but can live in a radically new way. What good news!
Father God, thank you for the good news you have revealed in Jesus. Amen.
How can you more directly live out of the good news of Jesus?
