1 Corinthians 11:2-13:13

Understanding our identity is critical to living well. In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul claims that every believer is part of the "body of Christ." When we place our faith in Jesus we are instantly connected to his body. Paul deals with two potentially wrong ways of responding to this truth. The first is to think we are not necessary. We may feel like we have nothing to offer and therefore are worthless. We view ourselves as an appendix where we can be easily removed without any issues. In fact, some of us may feel like not only are we not necessary, but we are a drain on the whole system. This is not true! A second error is to think that we are so amazing we do not need the rest of the body. We can incorrectly think that we can do life on our own. If we just work harder or act smarter, we do not need anyone else. Again, this is not true!

A correct understanding of our identity is we are a critical part of the body but only a part. We need others and others need us. This means that people need you to show up regularly on Sundays, they need you to serve, and they need to serve you. You are an important part of the body and, for it to function well, it needs you and you need it.

Father God, help me to play my part in the body. Help me to serve others and be willing to be served. Amen.

Which error do you struggle with more; to see yourself as a valuable part of the body, or to recognize your need for others?
