Hebrews 8:1-13

The book of Hebrews wants us to consider everything that is great and recognize that Jesus is greater. No matter how great the beauty we have experienced, Jesus is more beautiful, and he alone is fully satisfying. Part of the reason Jesus is superior is that the covenant he brought supersedes all previous ones. The new covenant is superior to the Mosaic because it transforms hearts through the work of the Holy Spirit and offers complete forgiveness. The fact that animal sacrifices had to be continually offered in the Mosaic covenant shows that it never fully satisfied God’s justice towards sin. God was fully and only satisfied through the death of Jesus. That is why his work is described as superior.

One of the concerns of Hebrews is that people were prone to go back to old covenant practices due to tradition, habit, comfort, etc., instead of enjoying the fullness of the new, superior covenant. Even though Jesus is superior, it was easier to continue in their old ways. We aren’t tempted to go back to the old covenant, but we are continually tempted to drift away from Jesus and look to other things for fulfillment. We are prone to go back to inferior beauties, pleasures, and patterns rather than finding satisfaction in Christ alone. So let us fix our thoughts on Jesus, embrace the full salvation he offers, and enjoy the abundant life he makes available to us today.

Father God, thank you for the new covenant which Jesus brought. Help me to find satisfaction in him alone. Amen.

Where are you tempted to look for satisfaction apart from God?
