1 John 1:1-4:6

This evening, we will gather for a Christmas Eve service. For many, this is a family tradition, but John says that nostalgia is not the reason or purpose behind Christmas. There is something far greater happening. Christmas is essential because Christ’s birth and life grant us fellowship with God. This is the ultimate need we have as a people, a need to be with God. Since the fall of Adam and Eve, there has been a division between God and humanity. The perfect communion between God and his creation was shattered and despite God’s instructions to build the tabernacle, and then the temple, the fellowship was not completely restored. Yet through Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection, we can have fellowship with him. We can enter right into the presence of God and enjoy this amazing gift.

This gift not only takes us into God’s presence but transforms us. The more time we spend with God the more we should walk in the light, in unity with other believers, in love, and obedience. Let us embrace the fellowship we have with God and others and become people who reflect his glory.

Father God, thank you that I can come to you right now in prayer. Thank you that I can walk with you, live with you, and impact the world for you. Help me to reflect your character in the way I live today. Amen.

How have you seen fellowship with God transform your character?
