James 4:1-5:20; 1 Timothy 1:1-2:15

In a small group I attended, one of the people mentioned some advice they had received from a coach, which was, why take responsibility when you can blame others? As we joked about this in my group, the quote continued in a long line of foolish people like Adam and Eve who blamed others rather than taking responsibility for themselves. James 4:1-10 describes our need to take responsibility by recognizing the biggest issue in our lives is our broken, sinful desires. Rather than pointing the finger at others, we need to acknowledge our brokenness. Paul models this in 1 Timothy 1:15 when he says, "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am the worst."

He is willing to confess the full extent of his sin, which as a rebel against God, makes him the worst of sinners. Embracing this mindset will lead to humility before God and others. James 4:7-10 describes this process as submission, drawing near to God, purifying our lives, mourning, and humility. Let us walk with the humility that comes from recognizing our sinfulness and the radical act of grace that has been given through Jesus.

Father God, help me to be humble before you. I acknowledge my sin, selfishness, and pride, and turn from it. Help me to walk before you and others rightly today. Amen.

How would a better understanding of your sin lead to greater humility before God and others?
