JOB 8:1-11:20

One of the major issues we see in the conversation between Job and his friends is the distinction between knowing a truth and applying it. As we look at Bildad’s and Zophar's statements in our reading today, we see that they clearly understand God's justice and humanity's sinfulness. They comprehend these realities, but misapply them to Job's situation. They believe that since God is just and we are sinful, Job must be receiving punishment for his sin. These faulty ideas affect their relationship with Job, and ultimately, their relationship with God. We can fall into similar traps in our own lives. Just as Job could not see into heaven to understand the conversation between Satan and God, so we do not always understand the whys behind the circumstances of our lives. We need to rest on God's truth, but have humility and recognize the inherent mystery to life. We need to trust in God, be humble and slow with our counsel to others, and be willing to often say, "I don't know."

Father God, thank you that you are always at work, even when I don't understand what you are doing or why you allow certain things into my life. Help me to rely on you and not myself. Amen.

Question: When have you found yourself misapplying God's truths to your life?
