GENESIS 11:1-26; 1 CHRONICLES 1:24-27; GENESIS 11:27-31; GENESIS 12:1-14:24

God's plan seems to be consistently thwarted in the beginning (and throughout the rest) of the Bible. God starts by choosing to work through Adam and Eve, but this is thwarted by their rebellion. Then we see God work through Noah and his lineage, but their righteousness would not be sustained in their future generations. Now we see God choose to work through Abram who would become the father of a great nation. He promised a man who was childless in his old age that through his line blessing would come to the entire world. Abram initially chooses to listen to God and leaves behind his family, land and all the security that comes with these things to obey God. He gives up the known in order to embrace the unknowns that God would lead him into. In the ancient near east to leave your family was to surrender power, prestige, wealth, and identity; yet Abram was willing to do so in obedience to God. Abram seems like such a promising figure, maybe even the one who would destroy the serpent, and yet like all of us he is deeply sinful. Shortly after God's initial promise to him he leaves this promised land to flee to Egypt. Then upon his arrival he lies about the identity of his wife. Abram seems to rely on the tactics of the world rather than faith in God and his promises. How often we follow the same path. We read and embrace the promises of God and his faithfulness and then find ourselves moments later doubting what he has said and relying upon our own resources. Like Abram, we too quickly forget that God is faithful and that we should trust him.

Father God, help me always to trust you and your promises. Help me to walk by faith and not by what I see from my limited perspective. Thank you that you are always faithful, so help me to rely on you. Amen.

Question: In what area of your life do you need to deepen your trust in God?
