Matthew 13:24-46
What is the kingdom of heaven? It is one of Jesus’ most commonly taught ideas, but it can seem like a vague concept in our minds. At minimum a kingdom involves a territory, a ruler, and the ruled. Christ helps to open up the concept of the kingdom of heaven through five parables: the parable of the weeds, the mustard seed, the yeast, the hidden treasure, and the pearl. When we combine all of these parables, we will discover that God is ruling over a kingdom already in existence, but one that is not fully as it will be.
We see God’s current kingdom as one where both the righteous and the wicked live together. The current state of the kingdom is imperfect but we have a perfect ruler. It is currently small but the kingdom will continue to grow into a massive entity until Christ returns and brings the fullness of the kingdom. The final two parables describe the incomparable value of God’s kingdom. Nothing in this world can possibly compare to God and his kingdom. Therefore, we should live hyper-focused on living for God and eternal, significant things. Entrance into the kingdom is still available to all, but a time will come when no new citizens will be accepted. So let us trust in God’s rule over us and the world, let us seek to expand God’s kingdom, and let us live as his servants allowing him to lead every aspect of our lives.
Father, thank you I am a part of your kingdom. Help me to live submitted to your reign today. Amen.
How should being a citizen of God’s kingdom impact the way you live?
