Philippians 2:12-4:23

What do you consider valuable? You may have family heirlooms, investments, collectibles, or your retirement account which you value above other things. In Philippians, we discover what is of utmost value. Paul acknowledges he valued his ethnic identity, his obedience to the law, and his standing among his religious peers, but he now understands all these things to be trash next to Jesus. Jesus is so superior to everything else that any seemingly valuable thing is worth nothing next to him.

Do we view Jesus that way? Would we be willing to surrender everything to have him? Paul says we should be willing to give up everything because of his superiority. Nothing can give life, salvation, meaning, or purpose; therefore, we should be willing to cast aside everything for him. May our hearts and our lives cry out like the song “Jesus over everything.”

Father God, help me to see Jesus as greater than everything else. Help me to value him and love him in the way that he deserves. Amen.

What would help you to more clearly see Jesus’ superiority?
