It is easy to substitute things for God. Generally, these are things like money, possessions, comfort, and friendship but they can also be things like tradition, rules, and spiritual experiences. Religion can easily become a replacement for a relationship with God and we see this consistently in the lives of the Pharisees.

The Pharisees were so focused on legalistic Sabbath adherence that they could not see what Jesus was doing right in front of them. Their rules kept them from seeing that the Messiah was in their presence. In the same way, our manmade rules can block us from seeing God at work. We can put God in a box and when he does not match our expectations, we cast him aside. The legalism of the Pharisees put the focus on them and their deeds rather than on Christ. Whenever we replace grace with performance we will lose sight of God. So, we must be sure to keep our eyes on God, rest in his grace, and allow him to lead us. We need to see him for who he is and be able to see where he is working, so we can give him praise.

Father God, help me to follow you. Help me to be led by your Spirit and not by my own misunderstandings. Amen.

How does legalism keep you from experiencing closeness with God?
