Who is the winner? Typically, we decide a winner based on a single game or an individual season. We crown the winning teams as champions and move on. God’s view of a winner is based on a much longer perspective. Babylon is about to destroy Jerusalem and is one of the most powerful nations on Earth. Yet God looks into the near future and through Jeremiah reveals Babylon’s downfall is coming. They will be destroyed by the Medes. Those who looked like winners will become the losers. Throughout our readings this year, we have seen people like Job, David, Jeremiah, and others express their confusion at why God allows the wicked to be winners, while the righteous seem to lose.

One of God's consistent answers is everything will be made right in the end. Babylon will be punished for their sins. The wicked will be judged, and the righteous will dwell in paradise. Today may seem confusing, but eternity will make it all clear. So, consider whether you are living to be an eternal winner or one that only wins on earth? Choose to live considering what matters and to live for God’s eternal glory.

Father God, thank you for your hand of justice. Help me to never think one moment tells the whole story of what you are doing or what you will do in the future. Help me to trust you in all situations. Amen.

What current situation are you struggling to reconcile with God’s justice and how can you rely upon him with it?
