Mark 14:53-65; Matthew 26:57-68; Mark 14:66-72; Matthew 26:69-75; Luke 22:54-65; John 18:25-27; Mark 15:1; Matthew 27:1-2; Luke 22:66-71; Matthew 27:3-10
How committed are you to the truth? If you are ever sworn into a court case, you will be forced to swear that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. This should not be a mindset only for a courtroom but for all of life. After Jesus’ arrest, we see a serious contrast between Jesus' commitment to the truth and Peter's. In the face of certain persecution and death, Jesus confesses his identity as the Messiah and Son of God. As the day continues, he will hold on to the truth regardless of its cost.
At the first questioning, Peter denies he is a follower of Jesus. He will go on to reject Jesus three times when the cost would have been far less for him than for Jesus. In contrast to Peter, we need to always confess Jesus as Lord and keep our identity in him. It may cost us like it did Jesus, but to reject the truth is to reject Jesus and the life he offers.
Father God, help me to remain committed to your truth no matter what the world throws at me. Help me to remember that life is only available in you and not in the world or its acceptance. Amen.
What causes you to lose your grip on truth?
