Jeremiah 31:15-40, 49:34-51:14
How easy it is to feel like God has abandoned us when difficulty comes. We so often expect that God is going to deliver personal happiness and comfort to us, when that has never been promised. Judah would have wondered these same questions about where God was having watched many of their friends dragged away while a remnant remained in the land. Yet in the face of difficulty, Jeremiah reminded them of multiple truths about God. He first reminds them exile and difficulty are not the end of the story. He reminds them of the hope God will bring to Israel by returning them back to the land which he has originally promised to Abraham. He speaks of a future covenant he will make with them. This new covenant which Jesus enacted speaks to God’s desire for relationship with his people during all circumstances. He never forsakes his people but rather is always moving towards them.
Finally, he reminds them that he is greater than any opposition they face. Jeremiah 50:34 says, “Yet their Redeemer is strong; the Lord Almighty is his name. He will vigorously defend their cause…” Like Judah, we can always remember, no matter what we are facing, there is a future hope, that God is with us, and that God is greater than what we are facing.
Father God, thank you for who you are. Thank you your love always remains and your presence never leaves me. Help me to confidently trust you in the face of the difficulties I face. Amen.
Which truth about God (he gives us hope, he is with us, and he is greater than our circumstances) do you need to most remember today and why?
