Micah 6:1-7:20; 2 Chronicles 32:1-8; 2 Kings 18:13-18; Isaiah 36:1-3; 2 Kings 18:19-37; Isaiah 36:4-22
Trust. In whom or what do we trust? Hezekiah “trusted in the Lord, the God of Israel” and he “did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father David had done.” Hezekiah removed the places of idol worship. He broke the bronze snake that Moses had made in the wilderness calling it ‘Nehushtan’ meaning “It is only bronze, not god” (2 Kgs 18:3-6) (NKJV Abide Bible). Worship of the true God was re-established in Jerusalem. Then Sennacherib’s envoy appeared on the scene and challenged the people’s trust. He cast doubt on the peoples’ trust in strategy and military strength, in Egypt, and in God.
The people listening on the wall became fearful. The field commander listed the gods of other nations that could not defend the people of their lands. Hezekiah said, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the Lord our God to help us and fight our battles.” Be strong and courageous means “being immovably committed to obedience and trust in God” because God’s presence is with us (NIV Biblical Theology Study Bible). When we go through life, Sennacheribs will come into our lives, jarring our trust. Our challenge is to be immovably committed to the Lord.
Father, help me see your holiness, desire with all my heart to obey you, and truly trust you when things go upside down. Amen.
What is an area of your life where you can trust God?
