Daniel 2:1-3:30; Jeremiah 7:1-8:3
People are fickle. I see this in my kids where their favorite food one day becomes something they refuse to eat the next. We can see it in the divorce rate of our country. Sadly, we can also see it in people’s relationship with Christ. Those who are passionate about Jesus one day can become those who are apathetic or verbally reject him in the next. We see this fickleness in Nebuchadnezzar. After Daniel tells him his dream and interprets it, he says, “Surely your God is the God of gods and the Lord of kings.” In this moment he is acknowledging that YHWH is the one true God over all. This moment of seemingly sincere worship is followed by the crafting of a massive statue to which everyone must bow. When a small contingent of Jewish men refuse to worship the idol, he becomes so angry he demands their death. When God miraculously saves these three men from death, Nebuchadnezzar responds by saying, “Praise be to the God of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego” (Daniel 3:28).
How rapidly Nebuchadnezzar seems to move from hot to cold and back again. One moment he acknowledges God’s greatness and glory, and in the next he puts his own desires at the center of his life. Unlike Nebuchadnezzar, we need to ensure that we choose steadfast commitment toward God. Since God is faithful to us, we should be faithful to him. May we not be lukewarm but rather passionate about our God.
Father God, help me to make you my first and ultimate love and prioritize you before everything. May you always be my first love. Amen.
