Jeremiah 42:1-44:30; Ezekiel 33:21-33

How many times have you asked for someone's opinion when you really did not care what they said because you already had your mind made up? You may have been looking more for validation rather than information. The remnant in Jerusalem claimed they were willing to do what God told them, but when the answer was not what they expected, they refused to listen. They had already made up their mind and when God did not affirm their choice, they simply stayed on the same course. It seems dishonest when we ask for someone's advice and then ignore it, and the height of foolishness when we do that toward God. God always seeks to lead us into the fullness of life, and to decide our own path is to wander into disaster. That is exactly what happened to the remnant as they fled to Egypt.

From a human perspective it made sense, but since God was not in it, it would only lead to defeat. Similarly, God's plans may seem to not make sense to us but obedience to God is always the path of wisdom and life. Therefore, let us have ears to hear what God is saying and respond by doing what he tells us to do.

Father God, help me to obey your word. Help me to walk in your commands today. Amen.

How can you listen more carefully to what God is saying and gain a greater heart for obedience?
