Ezekiel 34:1-36:38

Shepherding is a foreign concept to us but not to the pages of the Bible. One of our most familiar passages from Psalm 23 is that God is our shepherd. The imagery of God being our shepherd extends beyond that one well known chapter. Ezekiel 34 speaks of God as our loving, caring, and concerned shepherd. God meticulously provides for his people─every one of us, every day. This same image is used of Jesus who is our good shepherd. The slot that YHWH fills in the Old Testament as our shepherd is filled by Jesus in the New Testament.

One of the reasons we know Jesus is divine is because he does that which only God can do. God the Father, and Jesus, guide, care for, and shepherd us. Therefore we should seek to follow him. There are many people who want to shepherd us but only one who will do it perfectly. So let us listen to the loving voice of our Good Shepherd and follow where he leads.

Father God, thank you that you and your Son are my shepherds. Help me to listen to your voice and follow you. Amen.

How can you be a more attentive sheep to the leading of your Good Shepherd?
