Even before social media, people were influenced by others. In 1 and 2 Kings, nearly every king's reign begins by stating the mother’s name. This speaks to a primary influence in their lives. Joash’s reign is decribed by stating his mother was Zibiah, but the greater influence was Jehoiada the priest. Since Joash was seven when he became king, his early success was due to the counsel and wisdom of Jehoiada. This influence is most clearly described in 2 Chronicles 24:2: “Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years of Jehoiada the priest.”

When Joash was influenced by godly people, he walked with God; however, after Jehoiada's death, he replaced his influence with the officials of Judah who led him to abandon God. How sad such a godly life was so quickly led astray by new, bad influences. Each day we can choose to be intentionally influenced by the Spirit, by God's word, and by other committed disciples of Jesus; or we risk being influenced away from God.

Father God, influence me by Jesus, by your Spirit, and by things of you. May I not be lead astray like Joash but be committed to you all my life. Amen.

Who is the Jehoiada in your life (a godly influence)? If you do not have this person, who can you ask to play this role?
