We probably all know someone who seems to be far from Christ. We may have been praying for this person for a long time, and even shared the gospel with them but were rejected. We may categorize this person and situation as hopeless, but I think looking at the life of Manasseh may give us a renewed sense of hope. When Manasseh became king, he did "evil in the eyes of the Lord." When the text says “evil” it includes things like sacrificing his own kids. Think of the levels of foolishness and evil to which someone stoops before murdering their own kids! Yet after his enslavement by the Assyrians, we are told that "in his distress he sought the favor of the Lord...humbled himself greatly...then Manasseh knew that the Lord is God.” Proof of his repentance came in ridding the nation of idols and pagan elements that had been placed in the temple.
Manasseh's life shows the radical work God can do in someone's life. We are never too far for God’s grace not to be able to save us. So, when we think of those who are far from God in our lives, we can remember Manasseh, and know that God’s grace and salvation is greater.
Father God, I pray for [ ]. They seem so far from you, but I pray that you would soften their heart so that they might come to saving faith in Jesus. Amen.
How does your sense of hopelessness in a relationship affect it?
