Isaiah 58:1-63:14
One of the most common answers to how are you doing is, I'm fine. Literally, it is to feel that you are not bad or good, just okay. We, like Judah, may often find ourselves in this condition. If we think that we are fine, then we generally will not make any significant changes in our life. In the book of Isaiah, Judah had found itself unable to see the extent of their sin. They did not acknowledge the rebellion, disobedience, injustice, and the extent of their sins against God. They were unwilling to see how awful their lifestyles had become because everything seemed to be fine.
As we have seen throughout Scripture, we need to be able to see how terrible our sin is because this is what drives us to our Savior. If we cannot fix ourselves, then we need someone to do it for us. We need Jesus. The next time you are tempted to respond that you are doing fine, take the time to open yourself to God and see how you are really doing. Then take that sin to God knowing he will "bestow on [you] a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of despair” (Isaiah 61:3).
Father God, open my eyes to the extent of my sin so I can repent of it. As I turn to you, give me eyes to see the immensity of the salvation and grace you bestow upon me. Help me to see my need for you and your grace every day. Amen.
What keeps you from seeing the full extent of your sin?
