1 Kings 17:8-20:22

After a focus on the kings of Israel and Judah, the spotlight moves to the prophets Elijah and Elisha. As we read about their lives, we will see that being a spokesperson for God does not mean comfort and ease. God uses Elijah to remind the people of God's power against the inability of Baal and idols. The climactic victory at Mt. Carmel with fire coming from Heaven led to the slaughter of the prophets of Baal and spiritual revival among the people. Shortly thereafter, Elijah finds himself asking God to kill him. From great victory to a sense of defeat. Elijah allowed himself to be overcome by fear of Jezebel’s power.

We also can quickly forget the power of God. How is it that we can see God display His capability and then rapidly forget what he has done? We have seen this same forgetfulness in Israel, and now we see it in Elijah─a prophet of God. Regardless of Elijah's circumstances, the one constant is God's presence. He is with Elijah in the mountains and the wilderness, he is with Obadiah as he seeks to subvert Ahab's evil from within the palace, and he is with Elijah as he seeks to confront idolatry from the outside. God is always with us, so we have nothing to fear.

Father God, thank you for your constant presence in my life. Since you are with me, help me to be bold and courageous in living for you. Amen.

What causes you to forget that God is with you and how can you counter these lies with truth?
