What is the foundation of your life? On what do you ultimately rely? At the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus describes how the foundation of a house determines its longevity. In the same way, our lives will only be as enduring as their foundational basis. Today we see how quickly the spiritual foundation of a nation can erode. After roughly 40 years from the time of David, the kings of Israel and Judah both worshiped idols, "did evil in the eyes of the Lord," and pursued things other than God. The lone bright spot is Asa. He "commanded Judah to seek the Lord," he got rid of the idols, he sought God himself, and relied on him.

He recognized that God was the only sure foundation for him and the nation─to turn to anything else would lead to disaster. 2 Chronicles 14:11 perfectly encapsulates his trust and confidence in God. We can follow in Asa's footsteps in following God or look to money, comfort, power, or pleasure like Jeroboam, Rehoboam, Abijah, and Nadab. May we learn from the lessons and consequences of the wayward kings and choose to follow those who were devoted to God.

Father God, I surrender my life to you. Help me to rely on you, trust in you, and live for you. Amen.

What evidence in your life would reveal whether you are relying on God or something else?
