1 Corinthians 1:1-17
What is core to your identity? You might begin an introduction with your name, job, number of kids, place where you grew up, etc., but Paul tells us some of the most important aspects of our identity in verse 2. In this verse he identifies the church as those who are sanctified and called to holiness, and those who call on the name of the Lord. When is the last time you introduced yourself as sanctified? Probably never, and let us be honest, it would be rather weird, but as we think about ourselves, this is who we are. We have been set apart by God as his child, as his loved one, and as someone declared righteous. We have been made holy and only secondly are called to pursue holiness. Our identity as someone who has been sanctified should be reflected in practical ways in our lives. We do not try to earn the moniker of holy, but instead, seek to live up to who we are.
The language of “those…who call on the name of our Lord” speaks to the fact that we are in a relationship with Jesus. As in all our relationships, communication with God should be evident and prevalent. We should be calling out to him in every circumstance of life. We should live according to who we are. Our identity is not ultimately in any of the transitory things of earth but is based on our eternal relationship with Christ. He is the one we need to look to and in whom we need to remain rooted.
Father God, thank you that you have made me holy and through the work of Christ I can always draw near to you. Amen.
