1 Timothy 3:1-6:10
1 & 2 Timothy and Titus are called the Pastoral Epistles because they heavily focus on what it looks like to be a leader in the church. As you look at the list of requirements in 1 Timothy 3, you may notice there is far more focus on character than competency. Who a leader is internally gets far more attention in this passage than what they do. We see that a leader's life is to be marked by righteousness, faithfulness, and self-control. As you read this list, how does your life compare? How well does your character position you to be a leader?
Paul not only speaks to the character of a leader, but also they are to be faithful in small things, which gives them opportunities to lead in bigger things. The "overseer" is to have a track record of leading his family before he is placed in a position where he leads the church. So how well are you doing at being faithful at leading in the small things? We may dream about some future position of leadership, but God has placed us where we are today to lead. Let us lead ourselves to God, lead others to him, and faithfully represent his character through our lives.
Father God, help me to be a leader who reflects you today. Help me to lead others to you and serve for your glory. Amen.
Where has God placed you as a leader and how can you purposefully lead in a way that reflects God's character?
