Romans 15:1-16:27; 2 Corinthians 1:1-2:4
"The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet" (Romans 16:20). It might seem like a paradox to say that the God of peace will crush someone, but for peace to be accomplished, evil must be vanquished. This image of Satan being crushed goes back to the beginning of the Bible. After Adam and Eve's rebellion, God promised that "he (the seed) will crush your head, and you will strike his heel" (Genesis 3:15). This promise's fulfillment began at Jesus' death and resurrection but still awaits its conclusion when Jesus comes back and throws Satan into hell. The promise of this victory over Satan, evil, death, and sin occurs through Jesus.
Jesus is the answer to the problems of the world, the one who gives us hope, and the one who secures our future. As 2 Corinthians 1:20 says, "No matter how many promises God has made, they are "Yes" in Christ." Jesus ensures that every promise of God will come true. Their fulfillment may not come until after we die, but we can trust that Jesus will see that God's word never fails. He will soon bring about the culmination of peace and the restoration of all things, so we live with anticipation for what is to come.
Father God, thank you that you are always faithful to fulfill your promises. Help me to look to your Son for all that I need. Amen.
What is one promise of God that you want to cling to this week?
