Acts 10:1-12:5

New things are constantly starting. There are new restaurants in town, a new NBA season started a month ago, new friendships are being formed─all sorts of new things. In the same way, Jesus' death and resurrection brought a new thing. The old covenant was replaced by a new covenant; thus, a new way of relating to God the Father has been made available to us. Peter was introduced to this reality in stark terms when he received a vision that all food was now clean. All the old covenant food laws were removed. This was a clear way of God showing that people only needed to come to faith in Jesus and did not also have to become Jews through circumcision, ritual, etc.

This was not only revealed through Peter's vision but also in God sending the Holy Spirit to indwell Gentiles prior to any acts of obedience, including baptism. Jesus opened a whole new way of life to us and that is the way we are to live. We are not obligated to follow any of the old covenant laws as such; instead, we are to live in the new covenant way of life.

Father God, thank you for the way of life which Jesus introduced. Help me to live by your Spirit and in the path Jesus has revealed. Amen.

Besides kosher food laws, what other old covenant practices are we no longer observing?
