John 18:1-2; Mark 14:32-42; Matthew 26:36-46; Luke 22:39-46; Mark 14:43-52; Matthew 26:47-56; Luke 22:47-53; John 18:3-24
Doing what God asks is not always easy. Obedience may take us into persecution, rejection, difficulty, or hardship, but it is always worth it. Jesus found himself at a crossroads in the Garden of Gethsemane. He asked that the Father might take his cup (a symbol of wrath) from him, but when the Father did not, he willingly embraced the path that God had for him. This way of obedience would lead to rejection by his disciples, physical beatings, and ultimately death, but Jesus resolutely chose to obey.
In the same way, we need to choose to obey God. Regardless of the path or the outcome, obeying God is always the right thing to do and is always the path that leads to life. When we reach our own crossroads, we need to follow in Jesus' footsteps. If it comes in the form of temptation, we should recognize that God will provide a way out; if it comes in the form of confusion, we should understand that God will give us wisdom through his Spirit; if it comes even in the form of death, we know that there is eternal life waiting.
Father God, help me to follow you regardless of where you lead. Help me to obey all that you have commanded and entrust all my ways to you. Help me to seek your kingdom and your righteousness today. Amen.
What excuses, rationalizations, or ideas keep you from fully obeying God?
