John 15:18-17:26

There are moments in life when we feel unloved, unappreciated, hurt, or mistreated by others. Jesus speaks to many of these issues in John15:18-16:5a. He tells his disciples hatred from the world will come. They should not be surprised when they are mistreated, because this is the same way they treated Jesus. In these moments we may be tempted to repay hatred with anger or evil with wickedness, but Jesus calls us to rest in the love he has for us. Jesus' love is exhibited supremely in his death on the cross, the Spirit's love is seen in his presence, and the Father's love is described in John 17:23 as him having loved us as he loved Jesus.

An understanding of the extravagance of the triune God's love for us is necessary to help us respond in a healthy way to being unloved by the world. We will go through difficulty. We will go through hardship, but when these things occur, we can rest in the confidence that no matter how others respond to us, God always responds with love.

Father God, thank you for your extravagant love towards me. Help me to trust in your love when I feel unloved by others. Amen.

How would a better understanding of God's love help you to love those who do not love you?
