Mark 13:32-37; Matthew 24:36-51; Luke 21:34-38; Matthew 25:1-46

A common error people have made throughout the centuries is thinking they know exactly when Jesus will return. Several years ago, a few billboards were purchased throughout the US claiming that May 21, 2011, would bring the return of Jesus. Like all previous predictions, this one was a failure. Instead of trying to figure out an exact date, our role is to be watchful. We are to be prepared and ready for his return. We are to be watchful like a house owner who is prepared against a burglary. We are to be watchful like a servant waiting for the return of his master and living worthy of him. We are to be watchful like virgins waiting for a bridegroom.

Matthew 25:31-46 reminds us that the significance of being watchful will be shown in eternity. Therefore, let us live with minds alert, eyes open, and lives lived considering Jesus' return. We will not know the date, but we do know with certainty Jesus will come back one day and the way we live today should be transformed because of it.

Father God, help us to be watchful and ready for Jesus' return. Help me to be holy and prepared for him to come back. Amen.

What will it look like for you to be watchful today?
