If we looked around our homes, we may find several unfinished projects. Things we have started but never got around to finishing. We learn from our reading today that Jesus’ work is similarly not finished. Jesus accomplished everything necessary for our salvation, but we still await the ultimate healing and restoration of all things. This will come when Jesus returns. He describes a few things that must come before his return─destruction of the temple (which happened in 70AD), famine, war, persecution, heavenly signs, etc. We may find ourselves wondering about the delay in the project or concerned about all these events that still await fulfillment, but Jesus tells his disciples these details so they will not be afraid.

No matter how terrible the world becomes, knowing Jesus’ return is near should give us peace, comfort, and hope. Sin will not be the end of the story. Wickedness will not prevail. Death will not have the final word. Instead, Jesus will come back and make everything right. Therefore, there is no need to fear.

Father God, thank you that Jesus is coming back. Help me to wait for his return by casting off all fear and replacing it with faith. Amen.

How should Jesus’ return eradicate our fears?
