John 6:22-71; Mark 7:1-23; Matthew 15:1-20
This past week we have seen firsthand that physical bread is not enough. Material things do not last. It is awfully easy, even after you have put your faith in Christ, to get caught up in material things or the trappings of religion like the Pharisees did, but none of that will satisfy. Physical bread is not enough. Material things alone do not satisfy. Money, homes, cars, success, and even our relationships do not satisfy our need for the ultimate purpose in life. The bread Jesus is discussing is the Word made flesh.
Jesus is offering us a personal, intimate relationship with Him. It is the gift of his total person to each one of us. When Jesus was asked “‘What must we do to do the works God requires?’ Jesus answered, ‘The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent’” (John 6:28-29). I think that is why we as Christians are primarily called believers and not achievers. The way we achieve is by first believing.
Lord, thank you that through faith in you, I have found a lasting purpose in my life, forgiveness for my sins, and the promise of eternal life.
Other than Christ, where do you look for satisfaction? Does that detract from your faith?
