Ecclesiastes 1:12-6:12

Meaningless. This is the key theme of the book of Ecclesiastes. It is a Hebrew word that is hard to define (just look at multiple Bible translations) but seems to focus on the temporary nature of the things of this world. Solomon tried a myriad of things in life to find satisfaction and purpose. He tried things which he thought would bring him pleasure. He tried sex, alcohol, and material possessions but is still left empty. Then he tried the accumulation of wisdom and wealth but determined that these could not satisfy either. They ultimately were meaningless, because they would not extend into eternity.

Regardless of the wealth, work, pleasure, or achievements someone has accumulated, the grave is the great equalizer. As we will see over the next two days as we finish the book of Ecclesiastes, God alone is the one who can give our lives meaning, anything else to which we turn will leave us empty.

Father God, the accumulation of stuff will never satisfy me. Help me to remember this and therefore, live for you rather than the things of this world. Amen.

When you do not look to God for meaning, where are you turning and how could you remember the meaningless nature of this pursuit?
