1 Kings 4:1-34; Psalm 72, 127

As Americans we are raised with a deep sense of individualism. We grow up with the ethos that we can do anything we put our mind to do. Though there may be positives to this mentality, on some levels it is deeply unbiblical. From the beginning to the end, the Bible speaks of a deep need for community in our lives. We are to live deeply connected to others, not as isolated islands. Even the wise, powerful ruler Solomon is surrounded by chief officials and district governors. He was reliant upon these individuals to help him rule and to even provide him with food for the palace residents. Not only was he reliant on these people, but, to a far greater degree, reliant on God. Psalm 127 declares that "unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain."

There is not a single aspect of our lives where we do not need God. We need his guidance, power, and presence to accomplish anything of significance. Therefore, let us admit our need for God, our need for others, and live in community with them.

Father God, I need you. Help me to recognize my need for you in every aspect of life and rely on you. Also, help me to rely on others and value the people you have placed in my life. Amen.

How would recognizing your need for God and others change your priorities today?
