May 21

1 Kings 3:16-28; 1 Kings 5:1-18; 2 Chronicles 2:1-18; 1 Kings 6:1-13; 2 Chronicles 3:1-14; 1 Kings 6:14-38

The first thing we do each morning says a lot about our priorities. Do we reach for our phone first? Do we grab a newspaper or a cup of coffee? In the same way, what a politician or king does at the beginning of their reign speaks about their passions, interests, and agenda. We see the key priority of Solomon's kingship is to build a temple for God. He spent seven years collecting supplies and building the temple. This initiative speaks volumes about Solomon making God the priority of his life and reign. He understands his own comfort and fame pale in comparison to the necessity of putting God first.

As we continue to read about Solomon's life, we will discover he does not always keep God central to his decisions, but, at least, he starts off well. May Solomon's example challenge us to prioritize God as the first thing of our day and the preeminent thing in our lives.

Father God, help me to make you the most important thing in my life. May I wake up and think of you, and as I go about my day may I live for you. Help me to seek your glory above all else. Amen.

What is the first thing you do each morning and what does this say about your priorities?
