Psalm 35-38

I am a fixer, not always great at listening and even worse at asking for help. I continually rely upon myself and experience the futility to which that often leads. Perhaps because of that, I sometimes have a difficult time with the Psalms. For too long I have felt the Psalms are less God’s word to us and more our cry to him. They may be our cry to him; however, as part of Scripture they are in fact God’s word to us. It could not be any clearer than in the four psalms today. There seems to be a common theme─do not rely on your own devices; instead pray to God.

We may not currently be in a physical war, but there are constant attacks─attacks from the outside, wrestling with our old self, unhealthy emotions, and thoughts that flutter in and out of our minds. Rather than trusting in ourselves, we need to lean on God. We need to turn to him as the one who can do for us that which we cannot do for ourselves. So, in summary we all need to learn to be better at prayer.

Father God, thank you for the gift of prayer. Help me to rely on you rather than myself. Amen.

How can you learn to better rely on God?
