Psalm 22-26

The psalms are powerful emotional expressions, but they also provide us with significant revelation about God. One of the key descriptions of God we find in our psalms today is that of king. God is the sovereign ruler over the universe and over us. We are used to living in a democracy where we have a say in those who have authority over us, but that is not the way it is with God. God is the king whether we acknowledge him, rebel against him, or submit to his rule. Yet unlike all other rulers in human history, God always rules perfectly and for our good.

A similar description of God is that of shepherd. He is a loving leader who always seeks the good of his sheep. He leads where there is life and guards from that which would seek to take it away. Both God as our shepherd and king reinforces the fact we are merely servants and sheep who are called to submit our plans to him and allow him to perfectly lead us in all areas of life.

Father God, thank you that you are king and shepherd over me. Help me to submit my ways to your rule and your glory. Amen.

In what ways are you failing to submit to God's authority over your life?
