1 Chronicles 29:1-22; 1 Kings 1:1-53

What does it look like to be generous? A great description of generosity is in I Chronicles 29 as David gives 110 (!) tons of gold and 250 (!) tons of silver. To put that in perspective--the gold alone would be worth over 5 billion dollars today. David models extravagant giving, and his example is followed by others. David's response to the generosity of the nation reveals his motivation in giving. He gave because God first gave to him. David understands that everything he has, including the gold and silver he is giving away, were ultimately gifts from God. One of the clearest ways he can show his thanks is to give it back to him.

God does not need anything, he never lacks, but our generosity shapes our hearts to become more like his. Are you giving with the right motives and are you giving the right amount? No one else can determine this for you. As you recite the words of David in 1 Chronicles 29:10-13, hopefully, it helps you to further cultivate a generous heart.

Father God, thank you for everything you have given to me. You are a generous God who has blessed me in so many ways. Help me to respond with generosity towards those in need and toward your work in the world. Make my heart like yours. Amen.

How can you move towards greater generosity?

“I gave because God first gave to me”

nLet that sink in ,meditate on it and let it replay over and over in your head throughout the day.And remember that giving is not just giving of material items or wealth. Giving can be your time, your attention , your patience and most importantly your knowledge of and connection with God. Give willingly of all these things because God first gave to you.
