1 Chronicles 26:1-28:21

What does it take to be an effective leader? If you were to write up a job description for a leader, what would be in it? In 1 Chronicles 28 David spells out for his son Solomon what is necessary for him to effectively lead the nation. The first ingredient of leadership is obedience. Someone cannot lead others in something they are not doing themselves. The second ingredient is a consistent pursuit of God. They are not leading off past interactions with God but are fueled by the love and intimacy they have experienced with God today. The third and final ingredient is courage. Leaders must be willing to lead people into what is right, even when it is not popular. Leaders seek to please God rather than allow themselves to be pushed around by the changing attitudes of the world.

We are called to stand for justice and righteousness, especially when our culture is drifting away. None of us will be a king over a nation, but we are all called to be leaders in our spheres of influence, and to lead with obedience, a pursuit of God, and courage.

Father God, help me to lead others to you today. Help me to be led by you, and as you lead, help me to follow and make more followers of you. Amen.

Which of the three ingredients of leadership (obedience, pursuing God, courage) do you need to most intentionally add to your life?
