2 Samuel 19:31-20:26, Psalm 7; 2 Samuel 21:1-22; 1 Chronicles 20:4-8
Life is filled with turmoil. We resolve one conflict and then suddenly something else surfaces. This is true with David's life as well. He has no sooner fought off the coup of his son Absalom, when he must deal with the rebellion of Sheba and Israel. Not only does he have to deal with Sheba, but Amasa fails to fulfill his responsibilities as well. David is forced to put out fire after fire. As if external difficulties are not enough, David also must deal with the fact that he is getting old, thus unable to participate in the military.
Today you may feel like your life is like David's—you are struggling to put out fires and deal with the issues in your own heart. As we have continually seen, the great model of David is that he is quick to go to God. He runs to God in times of trouble, and he runs to God in times of great joy. He does not allow anxiety, anger, or frustration to overwhelm; instead he allows a recognition that God is greater than his circumstances to invade his heart and mind. If our problems seem insurmountable, we will become overwhelmed; but if we recognize our God is greater than our circumstances, then we can have peace through everything.
Father God, thank you that you are greater than anything I will face in this world, and thank you I can turn to you in all circumstances. Help me to remember your power, presence, and love for me in everything I experience. Amen.
What would help you to remember that God is greater than your circumstances?
