1 Samuel 20:1-21:15; Psalm 34

As David flees from Saul, he turns first to safety with Ahimelek, the priest at Nob, and then to Israel's enemies in Gath, the hometown of Goliath, who was killed by David. Both places of supposed safety are quickly shown to be anything but safe. As David writes in Psalm 34 his trust is in God who delivers and saves and is a place of refuge. Dr. Thomas Constable writes, "[David's] ultimate hope for provision and protection was not the priests, or Saul's enemies, but the LORD Himself...David's psalms clarify the proper response that the godly should make when opposition assails them."

Where do you turn for safety? When you feel threatened what do you do? We are to trust in God who rescues his people—earthly refuge will fail us, our God never will.

Father God, thank you that salvation is found in you. Help me to taste and see that you are good; to know that in you alone I can find refuge and safety.

Where are you tempted to turn to for refuge before God?
