1 Samuel 15:1-17:31

Saul seems like the perfect picture of a king—tall and handsome, but as we have seen, his internal disposition did not match his external beauty. Even Samuel was sucked into the idea that a true leader should be obvious in his appearance. When God rejected Saul and told Samuel to anoint a new king, he assumed that the tallest, oldest son of Jesse must be the one. God reminded Samuel (and us) that, "The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."

God has always sought leaders with hearts for him and not just those who look the part. David models this as he approaches Goliath. While everyone else in the army is overwhelmed with fear at the massive Philistine warrior, David is intrigued rather than frightened. As we will see tomorrow, he is able to see with God's eyes rather than the eyes of humanity. The same eyes that we need to see things to fruition.

Father God, help me to see as you see. Help me to be able to see that which is good, righteous, and holy, and to follow in your ways. Help me not to see and judge as the world does, but as you do. Amen.

In what ways are you seeing like our culture instead of as God does?
