1 Samuel 9:1-12:25

Saul would have looked much like a modern-day politician. He was tall and good looking but, as we will see, his physical attributes could not hide his spiritual weaknesses. He was meant to lead the people but lacked the ability to even lead himself. He was placed in a position that only God should fill; thus, was an inferior king. This is the mistake Israel made. They thought that asking for a king would help them when really it only distanced them from God. Samuel warns them and reminds them of all the good things which God has done for them and their ancestors. It is God who had rescued them, not kings, judges, or leaders. They often missed how God, not a human leader, was doing the true work.

In contrast to Israel, we need eyes to see God rather than the things of this world. We need to continually commit to God as our king and call upon him when we are in need— not to look to anyone or anything of this world to satisfy.

Father God, thank you that you are my king and king of the world. Help me to live with you on the throne of my life and continually acknowledge that you are the one who rescues and redeems. Amen.

Where have you made an inferior substitute try to play the role reserved only for God?
