Hosea 10:1-14:9; Jude 1:1-25; Psalm 127:1-5; Proverbs 29:15-17
A baseball game is not over until the final out and football games are not over until time has expired. Similarly, until someone dies there is always the opportunity for them to receive eternal life. It is never too late until their life is over.
Hosea has consistently pointed out the sins of Israel. The immensity of their sin seems so overwhelming that there seems to be no hope for salvation. Their wickedness includes the description that they “make idols for themselves…offer human sacrifices and kiss the calf-idols.” Yet Hosea holds out hope. He calls the people to “seek the Lord” and “return to your God.” It is never too late until their life is over.
Jude is a letter with a similar point to that of Hosea. He points out the history of sin and rebellion in the Bible including the Exodus wanderings, angelic rebellion, Sodom and Gomorrah, Cain, Balaam, Korah, and the rebellious false teachers within the church. Yet even amid sin, there is God’s work of salvation. Christ is coming back and for those who have placed their faith in him, what awaits is eternal life.
So, let us live according to our salvation, let us proclaim the message of Christ to those who have not yet received it, and let us heed the call to “build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit.”
Father God, thank you for the gift of eternal life. Help me to proclaim the gospel and live according to it. Amen.
Question: Is there anyone in your life that you have lost hope that they might come to salvation? How can you continue to share Christ with them?
