Ezekiel 47:1-48:35; 1 Peter 2:11-3:7; Psalm 119:49-64; Proverbs 28:12-13
Where do you look for life? Where do you turn for peace, joy, and satisfaction? When you are feeling down where do you turn for happiness? There is an unending series of options in our culture where we can turn, but only one place that will provide what we are looking for, God.
Ezekiel describes a stream of water that flows from the temple and brings life to everything it touches. The source of the water, God, brings about the outcome of life. It brings life to fish, trees, and ultimately to people. Whatever God touches becomes infused by him and by the abundant life that only he offers.
Peter then talks about some inferior sources of life we might be tempted to turn to. He says that we might look to sinful desires rather than righteousness, to self-assertion rather than submission, and sinful leaders rather than the “Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.” If we want to experience life we need to turn to the only place where it is available.
As the psalmist describes only when we turn to God can we find hope in suffering and “my portion.” He is the only one who can satisfy, the only place for peace, and the only one who offers life that is truly life. So let us run to him and rest in him.
Father God, help me to look to you for life. Help me to run from the things of this world and embrace the greater satisfaction that you offer. Amen.
Question: How can you remember that true life is only found in God?
