Ezekiel 33:1-34:31; Hebrews 13:1-25; Psalm 115:1-18; Proverbs 27:21-22

John Maxwell says that a leader is someone who “knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way” and every one of us is called to be a leader. The only question is whether we are leading effectively or not.

Ezekiel uses two images to describe leadership. He first describes leaders as watchmen who see what is coming and share this with others. This position is true of us as well. We are called to proclaim the reality of Christ’s death, resurrection, and the future judgment to come. We need to speak the truth to others so that they might find life and avoid the destruction coming upon all who reject Christ. Since you are a watchman, how well are you leading others? Second, Ezekiel describes leaders as shepherds. People who direct, guide, and care for others. Ezekiel is saddened that Judah is filled with leaders solely focused on their own well-being. They put themselves first and thus failed in their leadership calling. We are also called to be shepherds who lead others, so how well are you leading in providing love, care, and direction to those around you?

We are not only called to be leaders but also need to be led. In Jesus, we have the ultimate watchman and shepherd. We have the good shepherd who leads us into the fullness of life and a watchman who communicates the truth. We also have earthly leaders who Hebrews 13 speaks of. We need to make sure that we are being led by godly examples who know the way, go the way, and show the way, and make sure that we are being that leader as well.

Father God, thank you for providing perfect leadership in my life. Help me to lead others to you and have the wisdom to do this well. Amen.

Question: How can you lead more effectively in a way that follows Jesus' leadership model?
