Christianity is personal but not private. When we enter into a relationship with Christ we also enter into a relationship with his family. Hebrews 11 has described the community of faith that we are a part of, and chapter 12 describes what difference this community should make in our lives. Notice even those who have followed God thousands of years before us, should still impact the way we live.
Our community should compel us to throw off the sin that keeps us from following God. The beautiful lives of those who have lived by faith should be examples to us of the greater life that comes for those who choose obedience rather than sin. Like a runner shedding excess clothing to run faster, so we should peel off any sin that keeps us from following after Jesus.
Further, we are to fix our eyes on Jesus. He is to be the one we are looking to as we run. When I began driving, I was constantly reminded that where I was looking was the direction I would head in. Similarly, we are to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus to help us successfully navigate the difficulties of life. We need community but those around us are not perfect, while Jesus is. People, our church, and pastors will disappoint us, but Jesus never will. So, if you feel like giving up, lean into community and lean into Christ.
Father God, thank you for community. Help me to build Christ-centered relationships and seek to play my role in the church. Also, help me to stay focused on you, Jesus, and your Spirit. Amen.
Question: Whose example in Hebrews 11 can you remember to pursue holiness in the face of difficulty?
