Ezekiel 27:1-28:26; Hebrews 11:17-31; Psalm 111:1-10; Proverbs 27:15-16
Pride is an insidious disease within our hearts. It can cause us to insulate ourselves from God and believe that we can falsely save ourselves. We need to learn to break through this self-reliance and walk by faith.
Ezekiel points us to the foolishness of Tyre’s pride. They relied on their wealth, wisdom, and position in the world, and yet, like a ship in a storm, they would be destroyed. We may look to our bank accounts and stock portfolios as the source of peace and comfort, thinking if we have the right number of zeroes everything will be fine. Yet in one instant all we rely on can disappear. Ezekiel then highlights the ruler of Tyre who in his lofty position is not immune to being humbled. This points to the fact that confidence in titles, positions, credentials, or wealth will not satisfy. Finally, Ezekiel ends by moving from the ruler to the “king of Tyre” whose description seems to be of Satan, the spiritual power behind the throne of Tyre. Yet even Satan with his length of life, position, beauty, and wisdom can't stand on his own laurels before God. As is repeated multiple times in this section, he will "come to a horrible end and will be no more."
The only hope we have not to end up like Tyre and the powers behind it is faith in Christ (see Hebrews 11). As we will see in Revelation, all world powers and leaders will be tossed aside but those who stand with Christ will stand forever. So rather than walking by faith in ourselves we should live with faith in God and rely on him alone.
Father God, help me walk by faith in you and not place my confidence in myself, my wealth, or my position. Help me to rely on you in every situation of life. Amen.
Question: When you are not walking by faith in God what are you putting your faith in?
